class=\"size-regular\">On a wooded rise just southeast of the sinuous <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////crystalbridges.org///">Crystal Bridges Museum<\/a> in Bentonville, Arkansas, a new 85,000-square-foot building is set to open in May: the <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////www.heartlandwholehealth.org///">Heartland Whole Health Institute<\/a>. The vision of philanthropist Alice Walton (Walmart heir and founder of both Heartland and the <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////alicelwaltonfoundation.org///">Alice L. Walton Foundation<\/a>, which operates the 134-acre Crystal Bridges campus) the structure, designed by Fayetteville-based <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////www.marlonblackwell.com///">Marlon Blackwell Architects<\/a>, is part office, part retreat, part conference center, information resource, and wellness center. All these pieces are dedicated to Heartland\u2019s mission to challenge the conventions of a siloed, reactive healthcare system by encouraging a more proactive, holistic approach to health-care design. \u201cPreventive health, not just sick care,\u201d as Walton puts it. &nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Blackwell, chosen via RFP, initially laid out a bold structure that incorporated stacked prisms and horizontal lanterns. But Walton, he recalls, told him, \u201cI like your concept, but I don\u2019t like boxes.\u201d She wanted something that flowed like the nearby landscape; almost growing out of the earth.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">In response, the firm created a meandering building that responds intimately to its Northwest <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////metropolismag.com//projects//railyard-park-arkansas///">Arkansas<\/a> setting of forests, bluffs, canyons, caves, and streams\u2014not to mention the holistic vision of the Institute itself. Walking around and through the building feels like a walk in the woods: gentle curves winding through the softly layered site while weathered brass fins\u2014like tall, narrow tree trunks\u2014filter the sunlight in a dappled pattern, casting changing shadows and drawing the outside in. Thick, multicolored fieldstone cladding with wide rope joints reflects the Ozarks\u2019 so-called \u201cGiraffe Houses,\u201d whose surfaces resembles, yes, the skin of a giraffe. We let those details inform a larger architectural ambition. It\u2019s about listening deeply, and then imagining broadly.\u201d That ambition takes shape in the building\u2019s bold curves, a long, tall cantilever\u2014a sweeping gesture that extends outward as a kind of community porch\u2014and a trussed roof system that allows for wide-open spans with minimal columns and uninterrupted flow beneath.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">\u201cMarlon allows his young staff to dream a bit,\u201d says Scott Eccleston, president of campus planning and facility management for <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////artandwellness.org///">Walton\u2019s Art and Wellness Enterprises<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">Inside, the building is tactile and immersive. Fluid spaces flow from one to the next, blurring divisions, and drawing visitors along intuitively. \u201cI think people are going to be hypnotized, says Eccleston. \u201cThe space is a journey\u2014it\u2019s like a topography.\u201d&nbsp; Curved, CNC-milled pecan wood fins\u2014made from local trees and featuring a marbled mix of light and dark tones\u2014lines ceilings throughout. Walls upholstered in gradient green wool felt evoke the forest canopy while providing acoustic control. Carpeting mimics moss-covered stones\u2014soft underfoot, with earthy greens and browns that emulate the forest floor. (Including what will be by far the Crystal Bridges campus\u2019s largest event space.) Upper levels, with open work stations and cocoon-like, pill-shaped conference rooms, are reserved for Heartland\u2019s offices, as well as those of other organizations founded by Walton, including the Art Bridges Foundation and the Alice L. Walton Foundation. A meditation space on the top floor rises like a conical chamber, its 30-foot-high Venetian-plastered walls glowing softly without revealing the sky directly. The office floors are just 50 feet wide, allowing daylight to penetrate from both sides. During the day, artificial lighting is rarely needed.\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>\u201cWe were thinking about wellness at every scale,\u201d says Blackwell. \u201cYou should be able to feel it in your skin,\u201d adds Meryati Johari Blackwell, the firm\u2019s founding partner and director of interiors.\u00a0 Like the forest, there are places to gather, to explore, and to pause or retreat. Just up the hill, a new medical school\u2014also backed by Walton and rooted in whole health philosophy\u2014is under construction, and will welcome its first classes this summer. Memorably named the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM), it will feature a 2.5-acre green roof rising three stories from grade level, filled with rock scrambles, patios, and even waterfalls. Moshe Safdie is finishing a major addition to the Crystal Bridges Museum. And Blackwell recently wrapped up a new parking structure for the campus, wrapped in greenish blue automotive paint inspired by a 1965 Pontiac Tempest and including a protruding \u201cproscenium\u201d for art and performance, not to mention a caf\u00e9 and an active public plaza. &nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>The overall goal, says Eccleston, is to provide a \u201cconnective web\u201d of art, recreation, community, and wellness. \u201cThe spaces have to feel good,\u201d adds Blackwell. \u201cNone of these entities\u2014nature, art, architecture, health\u2014are exclusive of each other.
