By night, they emit a warm glow as interior lights filter through the <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////metropolismag.com//products//glass-walls-that-make-a-clear-statement///">translucent glass brick<\/a> within. A compact 484 square feet, the pavilion backs up to their main residence and is at the same level as their primary bedroom. It skillfully integrates an exercise area, sauna, massage room, and bathroom, all tailored to meet one of the clients\u2019 daily physical therapy sessions. \u201cHe didn\u2019t use a walker or wheelchair but had mobility issues, so we focused a lot on the comfort of the interiors as well,\u201d L\u00e9niz adds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">The pavilion\u2019s dual-layered skin, crafted from <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////metropolismag.com//profiles//ronald-raels-solution-the-housing-crisis-muddy-robots///">custom prefabricated concrete<\/a> and hermetically sealed glass bricks, was built not only with an artful aesthetic in mind but with thermal performance as well. Courtesy Cristobal Palma <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainable Wellness Pavilions Blending Light, Acoustics, and Local Materials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">Inside, curved glass bricks offer diffused natural light, minimizing solar heat gain and moderating reverberation. \u201cDue to their age, [the clients] needed a bit more heating and cooling,\u201d L\u00e9niz explains. Since the pavilion is windowless, a subterranean mechanical system was used to maintain a stable interior temperature. The ground-coupled air system, buried four feet belowground, leverages the earth\u2019s temperature while <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////metropolismag.com//projects//perkins-and-will-circular-infrastructure-with-the-shenzhen-energy-ring///">reducing overall energy consumption<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">Beyond sourcing local materials to reduce transport emissions, the selections for the wellness pavilions speak to the overall <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////metropolismag.com//viewpoints//how-can-designers-listen-to-water///">sensory experience<\/a>. There is Chilean basalt flooring and benches, also seen in the garden. The surfacing is slip resistant and stays naturally cool due to its high thermal mass, while a <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////metropolismag.com//products//how-to-specify-stone-sustainably///">local pink-hued stone<\/a> provides pathfinding into the pavilion. Additionally, the architects installed <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////metropolismag.com//projects//taliesyn-design-new-studio-biophilic-design-prowess///">perforated metal sheets<\/a> to eliminate echo and an acoustic absorption material to make the interiors, with their 13-foot-high ceilings, feel spacious yet cozy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">\u201cAs architects, we should work with all of the senses. Acoustics are often overlooked, but they shape how a space feels,\u201d L\u00e9niz notes.
