While the midsized Indiana city is much smaller than Chicago, St. Louis, Sharjah, and Venice, it punches well above its weight. There is as much layered socio-cultural and historical complexity here as in these major&nbsp;metropolises,&nbsp;especially as a paradigm of the many American towns at this scale.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">What sets Columbus apart, however, is its position as a midcentury modern case study. Like so many company towns, a dominant corporate force\u2014in this case, the Cummins Engine Company\u2014was responsible for its infrastructural growth. Here, this resulted in the construction of numerous private, civic, and religious buildings designed by 20th-century heavyweights Eero Saarinen, Robert Venturi, Kevin Roche, Charles Gwathmey, and later, Deborah Berke. Columbus was a test bed for the visionary strategies they later enacted across the country and the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column article-header_content is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote size-regular\"><blockquote><p><\/p><cite>\u201cWe were thinking about the histories that have&nbsp;been omitted&nbsp;in the conversation around Columbus. Like Cummins\u2019s most consequential CEO, J. Irwin Miller\u2014the visionary and financial force behind much of Columbus\u2019s illustrious architectural development\u2014the event provides today\u2019s crop of critically minded practitioners with the chance to leave a mark, if only temporarily.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">Some have joined the slew of historic buildings as permanent features. For&nbsp;the 2022\u20132023 cycle of Exhibit Columbus, New York firm&nbsp;<a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////pau.studio//what//interoculus///" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PAU<\/a>&nbsp;conceived InterOculus, a canopied dome that continues to cover the intersection of Washington and Fourth Streets. The designers argue that, with the highest concentration of architecture fellowships in the United States, the Midwest region\u2019s spaces of architecture culture \u201care unquestionably spaces of emergence.\u201d Project by Sarah Aziz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group none\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Yes And: A Curatorial Framework<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">For the 2024\u20132025 cycle, a curatorial consortium of practicing architects, preservationists, and cultural critics chose the theme <em>Yes, And<\/em>\u2014a notion borrowed from improvisational theater\u2014as a more open-ended through line. They chose sites throughout town to mount 13 newly commissioned installations, each responding to specific public, semi-public, and private outdoor spaces as added layers of instigation and proposal. Also at play were considerations of site, history, community, and where these fundamental conditions intersect.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">While recipients of the J. Irwin and Xenia Miller prize&nbsp;were selected&nbsp;by the curators based on a shortlist, participants in the University Design Research Fellows program were chosen based on an open call. With funds raised from individual donors, corporate sponsors, and government agencies, LCF covers the cost of development and construction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">All were unveiled&nbsp;during an opening weekend celebration (August 15 to 16) and will remain on view for three and a half months. For the Brooklyn-based firm\u2014principals Jen Wood and Emanuel Admassu\u2014the agora of sorts is much more than an abstract reconstitution or monument to the original building. Inserted within the plaza leading up to the I.M. Pei\u2013designed Cleo Rogers Memorial Library, the shallow water basin emerges as a striking yet inviting blue monolith. Project by Studio Barnes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group none\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Joy Riding Design<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">Answering that call is Miami-based practice <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////germanebarnes.com///" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studio Barnes<\/a>\u2019s <em>Joy Riding<\/em> project. \u201cOnce we knew that we had the parking garage as the location of our intervention, we started thinking about the car, car culture, and specifically idling,\u201d says principal Germane Barnes. \u201cIf a car is just sitting there parked, what do you do\u2014sing, do homework, or just hang out?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">Consisting of a customized speaker system mounted to a mobile trailer, \u201cthe transformer\u201d is enabled with&nbsp;Bluetooth connectivity. Anyone can go up to the top level of Columbus\u2019s Jackson Street Garage and play&nbsp;music,&nbsp;or&nbsp;host an impromptu dance party.
