wake park near Pan\u0103\u015fe\u0219ti, the land dips softly into itself. What appears at first as a grassy mound reveals, on closer inspection, a door\u2014round, made of timber, and almost shy. Inside, there\u2019s quiet warmth, curved clay walls, and the soft light of a handmade ceramic lamp. These are the Hobbit Wake Houses by <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////lh47arch.com//en///">LH47 ARCH<\/a>, a trio of subterranean cabins that have quickly become one of Moldova\u2019s most admired hospitality experiments\u2014for their whimsy, and for how intently they listen to the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">\u201cHobbit Wake Houses exemplify the DNA of LH47: architecture that is ecological, deeply local, and narratively rich,\u201d says founder Serghei Mirza. \u201cEach project is a story told through making \u2014reviving craftsmanship, engaging communities, and blending buildings seamlessly into place.\u201d That DNA stretches across the firm\u2019s work\u2014from an underground <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////lh47arch.com//en//projects//underground-bathhouse///">bathhouse<\/a> to the City of Goats Kozy and Moldova\u2019s first <a href=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////lh47arch.com//en//projects//architecture-of-movement-and-play///">solar-powered sports center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column article-header_content is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\" style=\"object-fit:cover;object-position:50% 50%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=https://metropolismag.com/"https:////metropolismag.com//wp-content//uploads//2025//11//5-683x1024.jpg/" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-119767\" style=\"width:412px;height:618px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/5-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/5-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group none\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"size-regular\">Mirza treats the reference to Tolkien\u2019s bucolic fantasy as metaphor. For LH47, the hobbit is less a character and more an ethic\u2014of humility, belonging, and ecological balance. \u201cThe \u2018hobbit\u2019 reference is both mythic and practical for us,\u201d he says. \u201cIt evokes stories of homes that are purposeful yet unpretentious, deeply embedded in the land and culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">The early sketches, Mirza recalls, centered on \u201csoft shapes and a feeling of enclosure balanced by openness.\u201d From the outset, the work was guided by atmosphere, by the sensorial and emotional weight of form: \u201ca quiet retreat, tactile materials, and the gentle threshold between home and nature.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">That sense of calm and elemental simplicity carries through every decision\u2014from the thick straw-bale insulation that regulates temperature, to the clay plaster that breathes humidity in and out, to the locally-sourced timber frames. The three domed cabins are half-buried into the lakeshore\u2019s natural contours, each opening out to the water through a large panoramic window. Each house reads as terrain, or form that emerges from it, its green roof blending with the surrounding grassland. \u201cTo disappear into the landscape,\u201d Mirza says, \u201cmeans making architecture that is listens\u2014responsive to site, culture, and ecology. Nature itself becomes the protagonist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">That responsiveness was not confined to design. The process of building, Mirza emphasizes, was a continuous conversation between architects, craftspeople, and site conditions. \u201cKnowledge exchanges happened daily\u2014about joinery details, clay mixes, or how to craft ergonomic furniture from local timber.\u201d Specialists trained the team in straw-bale and clay plaster techniques, while interiors\u2014ceramic lamps, timber beds, tactile finishes\u2014emerged through collaborations with the local furniture studio Lemnaria and artist Eugenia Burlacenko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">\u201cThis kind of mutual learning revived skills and built strong community bonds,\u201d Mirza notes. The project thus became part workshop, part revival of Moldova\u2019s nearly forgotten material traditions. The studio realized the project independently as a signature initiative; a gesture of architectural entrepreneurship. When the team faced difficulties stabilizing soil on the green roofs, a local builder suggested adapting agricultural netting (an everyday mesh used to safeguard crops from wind and erosion, and stabilize soil) instead of imported systems. \u201cIt was an improvisation, but it proved stronger and more ecological than our initial ideas,\u201d Mirza recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">Inside, the Hobbit Wake Houses feel both ancient and modern\u2014like something found rather than built. Rounded ceilings absorb sound, and the hand-finished walls diffuse light into a soft, mineral glow. \u201cWe wanted guests to feel a sense of deep comfort and quiet surprise,\u201d says Mirza. \u201cVisually, the cabins blur with the earth, but inside they offer warmth, textured surfaces, and hand-crafted details that invite touch and contemplation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">The experience is sensory, almost monastic: an architecture of delay, where small gestures like the curvature of a bench and the weight of a timber door feel magnified by silence.
